Trends may come and go, but there’s nothing wrong with giving into the latest and greatest in home décor to see how it suits your style—even if just for a season. “There are ways to incorporate [trends] in a minimalistic way so you can easily swap them out if they go out of style or you decide to change your mind,” explains Paige Davis, host of TLC’s hit design show Trading Spaces. She suggests sprinkling in aspects of trending styles with accents pieces that are easily replaceable so you don’t have to completely overhaul your space to try out a new look.
However, if you do want to take on a big project, prep is key, according to Davis. She swears by ScotchBule painter’s tape when she’s repainting a space and says that cutting corners when it comes to renovations is never worth it in the long run. As someone who redesigns rooms in just two days time, she knows what she’s talking about.
This fall, whether you’re planning a gut renovation or just hoping to experiment with a new trend, you can expect retro looks to dominate your Pinterest board. “Retro is in. Period,” Davis declares. That means indulging in funky textures, patterns, materials, and colors to create home décor that pays homage to the past. Head to the flea market or local vintage store to scavenge for pieces worthy of a second life and take note of the six fall décor trends Davis predicts will be everywhere this season.
